Origins of the Getty Center

The Getty Center is part of a two-museum complex with another branch called Getty Villa located in Malibu. What started out as J. Paul Getty’s sprawling 1954 home set in the Pacific Palisades, turned into one of the world’s top museums when he expanded his compound with a separate museum wing in 1974. In 1976, after Getty’s death the property was turned over to a trust. With a huge collection to maintain, they needed to expand, and they bought a new property in the Santa Monica hills in 1983 that today is home to the Getty Center.

Unique landscaping methods

The beautiful property is groomed with the help of a herd of goats that trims the grass to reduce the cause of brush fires.

FAQs
